Q: Who are you called?

The name I was given at birth is Shebastian Burley so I wanted my artist name to still represent me so I chose S. Burley.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Young poet with a unique style and persistence to be a successful entrepreneur.

Q: What is your musical background?

I was signed on an independent label now I’m an independent artist under TBJRentertainment, John Casablanca Modeling and Talent Agency, Hollywood Auditions and Star Video Productions.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been a long lesson. I’ve learned so much in the past year and continue to seek knowledge.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

I’m inspired musically by life in general. I’m more of an observer so when I write. My music reflects the true emotions and feelings I have upon the world.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I look up to 50 Cent and Jay Z a lot especially from a business point of view. I mainly listen to Kendrick Lamar and follow his music. I like the messages in his music. He’s really saying something.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I would love to collab with Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Lil Wayne, The Game, Eminem and most of all my favorite rapper 50 Cent.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I listen to Kendrick Lamar a lot. I love music with soul, passion and a message behind it. I feel I can relate to his music cause I’m also an artist trying to find myself in this world. Also he doesn’t follow others. I also create my own style and continue to reinvent myself.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Since I create all my songs from scratch, I start with an idea or melody and build from that sound till I feel I have created a masterpiece defining a part of who I am as a person in a soulful type of way. As far as my writing creativity goes, it’s more of a feeling or inspiration I get from the track. I feel sometimes the words just come to me subconsciously and I always try to incorporate some type of knowledge or inspiration for the enlightened listeners that keys in to every word so that they fully understand the message. My ultimate goal is to create an art form that connects with the listener to the point where they become believers instead of just fans.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Personally I think the lyrics are more important. I’m more geared towards the conscious art form of rap and like to have a strong and sometimes deep message in a track that shows off my knowledge and creativity. The way I see it is if your not making somebody else’s life better then what are you doing with your thoughts? Positive thinking brings a positive aura; negative thinking brings a negative aura. I’m a strong believer in thoughts creating reality.

I love to create melody’s I feel that if your melody, lyrics, and song as a whole connect with you. Nowadays it’s all about being yourself as a artist and branding yourself. If you’re imitating other artists its shows that your not original.

Q: Where are you based?

I’m based in the Tampa Bay area but I’m originally from Georgia.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s a little tough but with faith and persistence you can overcome any obstacle.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I do more then just rap and make beats. I’m a model/actor for John Casablanca and Hollywood auditions as well in California. I’m currently working on getting my clothing line ‘’S.Burley By Conde Couture’’ launching off soon. We’re gonna have the S.Burley shirts up for sale for everyone who wants to support.

My album ”Through It All’’ is in the works. We have some amazing songs on the album that I personally think touch many topics and show my creativity like no other. I’m really excited to release my album I will definitely key yall in when we find out when it’s releasing. It should be within the next few months.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

I would say the respect and advice I got from the people I look up to, One of my best friends Andres Yepes of Star Video Productions taught me a lot and my clothing designer from Conde Couture just the positive people I put myself around. My manager is most definitely the most influential person in my life, how much more blessed can you be to have a mother who’s there for you and believes in you when nobody else believes.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Within the next year I feel my limitations are limitless. With persistence I hope to have a successful clothing line, excellent career in acting/modeling, get my music widely known to the world and keep making songs. I feel will gain a larger range of audiences.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I’m currently working more towards my fashion shows to start marketing my clothing line and launching it within the next few weeks.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I meditate a lot its keep me stress free and I feel like I gain an abundance of wisdom after every session. I strongly recommend meditating its part of my way of life.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

My favorite places to vacation would be either Las Vegas or California because I have always wanted to go for as long as I can remember.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Be yourself, stay positive and humble If you’re planning on being successful and growing your brand. Don’t just do music, try to be an entrepreneur. The more you can venture off into other positive aspects of business the more knowledge you can gain and opportunities that can come your way.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

This is just the beginning of my career I plan on many other ventures and success stories to come I’m looking forward building my exposure and gaining new fans/ believers I plan on having many more music videos and many more albums to come. I want to thanks Essential Pop for believing in me and allowing me to gain more exposure. Much love and peace to all.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I’m not really sure if there is one artist…? I think there are so many that are good, when I just here something that is good, it just does it for me. But if I had to say, I would say Flo-Rida, Eminem.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Artist Interview – Darius Lux

Darius Lux is an upcoming singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California who effectively combines rock and soul to produce some great pop music. Darius has incredibly profound and varied experiences in music and we were delighted when he agreed to complete a feature interview with Essential Pop. Buy: Proactiv

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Soulful and thoughtful rockin positive pop music by a singer-songwriter, legal alien and lover of life.

Q: What is your musical background?

I began playing classical piano and violin at age 6 and within a year was accepted at a music conservatory near London. By the time I hit early teens I felt unfulfilled by the rigidity of classical music and developed a strong hunger for American R&B, Rock and Hip Hop. This fuelled me to teach myself guitar, bass and drums and move to NYC where I got involved with all levels of production and performance.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

It’s been a good past year with many new challenges and accomplishments. Most recently, I have found myself magically surrounded by people who make videos and have thus created 2 unique music videos over the last year which have been satisfying in different ways.  I feel more open to the visual medium now and seeing where to take an idea beyond just recording it musically, I am excited to interface more with video in the future. I also played to the biggest crowds of my career so far with a gig at the Castro Street Fair in San Francisco to 1000’s of people – definitely felt like we were taking it all to the next level.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

So many people do and for different reasons. As a small child I was dazzled by Michael Jackson and Prince as entertainers and performers. Stevie Wonder has been a big influence as a recording artist, writer and singer. Artists like Tom Waits and Bob Dylan inspire me as lyricists and storytellers. Bono inspires me in his ability to grasp a bigger perspective of the world thru his music.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

More recently I have been very inspired by bands like Muse, so glad grandiosity and virtuosity have been brought back to Rock. I also love MuteMath – they have such a great, original sound and an epic live show. Michael Franti (Spearhead) inspires me as a human being; his message resonates greatly with me. Ben Harper too, every record just gets better and better and he is so prolific and always keeps it interesting with constant new collaborations.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Ha, what a great question – you know, I’d love to write a song with Chris Cornell, his voice is staggering and it would be fun to really road test those pipes one-on-one, not sure I could gig with him tho, he’d blow me out the water! Gigging would be a different thing altogether, I’d like to play a gig with acts that are diverse and different from me like Foster the People, Collie Buddz, Keane and Nikka Costa.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

At a glance, “Cough Syrup” by Young The Giant, “Somebody that I used to know” Gotye,  “Us and Them” by Easy Star All-stars, “Cinema” Remix by Skrillex, “Valleys of Neptune” Jimi Hendrix, “All the right moves” by OneRepublic, “Everlasting Light” by The Black Keys

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Different every time, could be a lyric that is floating around and drives it, a new guitar gadget with a groovy sound, waking up in the night with a bassline playing in my head – the spark of inspiration is random and the process then varies on what type of catalyst I’m dealing with, it never gets boring ;)

Darius Lux

Diesel

Buy: Diesel

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

That’s a good question, its close but I’d have to say melody since music does ultimately transcend words – like, I could still fall in love with a song even if it was sung in a language that I don’t understand.

Q: Where are you based?

LA

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s the tops. I really love LA and Southern California tho I grew up in London and studied/lived in NYC. LA is perfect for this time in my life – it has so much live music and festivals all year long and who can resist the beach and the sun. Plus, I can go skiing in the winter a few hours away, or pop to Mexico or go into the desert.

Q: What are you currently working on?

A new album, on the one hand I wanna press a button that will just have the whole thing done and at the same time I am enjoying the new journey of making music again, allowing it to flow naturally, allowing it to change and be different than before…

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Honestly, I don’t think I would say there’s been a monumental highlight yet – I had a great record release party at the House Of Blues (Hollywood), playing to 1,000’s at Castro Street, making the last video (“Way That It Goes”), but there is so much I am still driven to do that a real highlight is still waiting to manifest in its fullness…

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

I’d love to be put on the map of popular music in some way or another – whether it’s a viral video, actual radio play, a great placement on a TV show or movie – any of those things would help greatly and make a difference now

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I’m in the middle of booking the summer festivals – first one I just got confirmed for is the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna. We play from 7-9 pm on July 20th; the rest is still coming together right now.

Q: What do you do to relax?

Hot tubs usually do the trick;) I love to be in nature, far away from the noise of industry and the city, being able to sit with my feet in a stream and listen to the birds is probably the most perfectly relaxing thing I can think of.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

Thailand, I have been before for and stayed for 2 months and would go again in a heartbeat. I love how it feels almost like another planet, there is modernism in the midst of ancient tradition and it all somehow works. I have traveled all over Thailand and visited the islands and it is jaw-dropping from the hill tribes to waterfalls to fruit dropping off the trees to 2000+ year old temples. Plus the people are so sweet and really do smile everywhere they go – hence its nickname “Land of a thousand smiles”. I’d also take a week in Fuji or Aruba too LOL

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Never say never and never take “no” for an answer.

Editor’s Note: Darius Lux has the technical ability and all of the artistic attributes to enjoy a long and successful career in the music industry. We’re looking forward to his next album with much anticipation at Essential Pop!

What does the song FEEL LIKE! Feeling. That’s most important. Which means it is a gumbo pot of everything that matters. I love Waka

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Vintage progressive, trying to keep a classic twist on a futuristic sound.

Q: What is your musical background?

At the beginning it was classical, then I moved into Blues/Jazz, then into urban Hip Hop and into Pop. Now I’m into Dashism, whatever that may be.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

It has been the most awesome ride ever. I cant even say that its been a rollercoaster because although there are always ups and downs in life I’m in a great place compared to where I was twelve months ago its been awesome to see how things move and showed me the value of having a great team.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

My daughter. My life and great musicians like Cee-Lo Green, The Gap Band, Jay-Z, Mos Def, Trick Daddy, Ludacris, Flo Rida and producers like J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Kd Lamb?

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Absolutely! Cee-Lo would have to be #1 on that list. Stevie Wonder would be incredible, Lil Wayne, Scarface and LeCrae and LAWS, signed to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Honestly now I’m listening to a lot of newer artists from my city. I’m trying to keep it local; I want to build up the music scene in Jacksonville there are great artists like, Tough Junkie, Yung Trap and Young Cash.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I go into my studio and I turn off all the lights, I have blue lights in there so we call it the blue room. I sit at the keys and its just me and the keyboard and I’m just playing. I mix in various sounds and when I hear something that clicks I run with it. I don’t stop when I create I add everything I can think of and figure it out later. I call it the moment of impact, that’s the most important moment when creating music.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

They are very equally important. Think of any music that has longevity, anything you listen to today that you listened to ten years ago, they have both.

Q: Where are you based?

Jacksonville, Florida.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Definitely has its ups and downs, what I’ve noticed in my travels lately, people that are in the music industry know there is a lot of talent in Jacksonville but the general public doesn’t know who are from here, e.g. the Limp Bizkits of the world. Its frustrating being from here and seeing all the talent and knowing the world doesn’t appreciate it so I’m trying to get people to turn heads this way.

Q: What are you currently working on?

A couple records with Smash Mouth that I’m really excited about, did a record with Cupid called “Pop It Girl” and I’m working with a lot of artists here in Jacksonville. A free project to showcase the talent from JAX as well as working on my next project and touring in support of Tabloid Truth.

My ultimate goal in music is to score movies. I am working with some filmmakers who are doing short films and scoring some movies.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Meeting Stevie Wonder. I met Stevie Wonder last January at the NAMM conference in Los Angeles and he was one of the coolest most down to earth guys I’ve ever met. He was playing a YAMAHA keyboard and he was just playing and singing in front of a few guys and me. Had I not stuck with music and been doing this I wouldn’t have had that chance.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Over the next 12 months I hope that people really get a better sense of me as an artist. I want to show my musical versatility. Hopefully in 12 months no one will be able to put me in a box or say that I’m not a musician. I don’t particularly care if you love or hate the music as long as you respect the craft.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I like to do a lot of charity work so I am doing some shows for the Police Athletic League and my best friend Jeremy Mintzy who just got resigned to the Jacksonville Jaguars does an annual event that I go out to. I have shows in Florida and Louisiana coming up as well!

Besides that I listen to classical music and read the bible but the main thing is making music. When music becomes a job that’s when people lose the joy.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

My Dream vacation would be Fiji. I’ve always wanted to go there just because it’s so beautiful. I haven’t been too far out of the country but I’m looking forward to going all over the world. Take a week off.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

I’m still aspiring myself in a lot of ways but I would say don’t ever stop! Don’t let anyone tell you what you should be doing or what their plan for you is, have a goal and stay focused on it because you will be your biggest proponent.

Q: If you could classify your music in a genre or a number of genres what would it be?

The type of genres that I feel my music fits into and I am working on right now is: dance, pop, electro & house

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

The aim of my music is to give off a feeling enabling energy, happiness, positivity and love to all listeners.

Q: What is your musical background?

I have been singing since my childhood, going to music camps. I used to dream when I would grow up that I would study at a music school so I moved in London and went to the London School of Contemporary Music (LCCM).

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Since my childhood I have absolutely loved Michael Jackson, his music gives me the feeling that I should never give up. His music says a lot to me and speaks out to me. I am also very much inspired by Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys and I am crazy about Barry White because his voice is so unique and I can really relax listening to him.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

Adele, Michael Buble and Robin Thicke. I think they are amazing artists.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I would definitely want to work with David Guetta. His songs always make me happy.

Q: What songs are on your iPod at the moment?

I listen to a lot of Adele. Robin Thicke and Will Young, and then it really depends on the mood I am in for example if I am going out I would listen to club music and I would never listen to ballads, however if I am sad I would listen only to up-tempo songs to cheer me up like dance music.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I actually wrote one song in a very weird way it was so magical I just started to attend guitar lessons and I hardly knew how to play it, I just picked it up and started to play chords I knew and start singing. I just sang the whole song. I was crying. I literally wrote the song in 5 minutes, including the whole lyrics and melody. I didn’t have time to write it out so I recorded myself on the computer video to not loose it, so when I listened back I realized that I said whole story of what I was going through and I have heard myself and the things I was too scared to admit or even say it out loud to myself.

I heard it within my song. I haven’t recorded the song yet but I sang it on one of my gigs so if readers would like to hear it they can see it on my YouTube page

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEgkthx5hH4

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

In my opinion they are both very important because you need a good melody to get people listen to the lyrics:) but I pay a lot of attention to lyrics as well. When I create lyrics it always means something to me and I am trying to say something so it is big part of my music.

Q: Where are you based?

Central London.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It feels like I have made a lot of sacrifices, as I have to be far from my family and people I love, in order to do what I love. I know it will be worth it to follow my dream. It is though nice being in place where the ground is not frozen so I can put my heels more often and not being scared to fall over :) !

Q: What are you currently working on?

I am working on my new songs, which I am very excited about, and than I will be ready to start promoting my music; so I can get myself out there more.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

My biggest highlight so far in my career would be making my first music video and having positive feedback from people I don’t know. This really keeps me going and makes me want to create more and more songs for people.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

I would like to complete numerous recordings and start to promote myself, gig and create as much of a fan base as possible, because you are nobody without your fans.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I love watching movies and being on the Internet searching for things which could inspire me. I love to go in nice restaurants, I also love cooking, having a glass of wine and listening to Nina Simone in order for me to sit back, relax and contemplate about things.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I would love them to know that every time I start writing a song, I write it for them. Just keep up with me and see you soon.

Editor’s Note: Adore has an incredible voice which is suited to a wide array of popular music. At Essential Pop we’re sure that Adore’s many attributes will ensure that she enjoys a successful career in the music industry.

Artist Interview – Ugly Kids Club

Ugly Kids Club are an electronic guitar duo from Nashville, Tennessee consisting of Steve and Aliegh. At Essential Pop we were really pleased when Steve and Aliegh took the time to answer some questions about their music and experiences so that we could share it with you. Read the entire interview below where they discuss their musical inspirations, what they do to relax and what they’re hoping to achieve over the next 12 months.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

We are a minimalistic electronic/guitar duo from Nashville, perpetuating simple, danceable, weird dark grunge rock.

Q: What is your musical background?

I, Steve, studied classical music formally and have played in rock bands previous to meeting and working with Aliegh.

Aliegh grew up singing on stage at school and church, and to her hairbrush and whoever was there when she would stand on tables.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

We have only been a band for about 7 months, but they have all been good!  We joined efforts and began writing and recording immediately.  Our original goal was to have an EP finished by January with a video for every song to boot, d.i.y. style.  We accomplished said goal.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Musically, we look up to The Police, Talking Heads, Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine, The Kills, and anything Jack White.    (Steve) Though the musical landscape and definition of rock and roll is continuously changing and cross-pollinating, we feel like we are in the tradition and spirit of rock and roll.  We also have a healthy amount of punk/d.i.y spirit that drives us to do everything we can ourselves and make sure we love our music first before we share it with anyone.  Most of our musical heroes were pioneers and genre-benders in the same way we hope we are.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

The Beatles, Dylan, Talking Heads, Oh, you said modern.  Are the Kills modern?

Buy: Armani Jeans

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

We love Sleigh Bells, Crystal Castles, The Kills, Yeasayer, and the Black Keys.

Q: What songs are on your iPod at the moment?

Big question. You mean iPod. I (Steve) rock an iPod photo from 2005 with 60gb full of songs (but I mostly listen to Spotify these days-It is the future).   How much time do you have?  I’ll put it on shuffle and give you the first few artists.  Totally candid.  Really.  Ok, Led Zeppelin “Kashmir”, Paul Simon “Kodachrome”, Nada Surf “Speed Soul”, Radiohead “OK Computer”, Josh Rouse “It’s The Nighttime” (please tell me you know who Josh is-SO good), The Beatles “Golden Slumbers”.  Perfect place to stop.  Amen.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

We like to work side by side surrounded by guitars drum machines and keyboards.  We usually start with a beat that Steve makes and build from there.  We tend to give up on a song if we can’t decide what it’s about, or if it isn’t making sense.  This whole band is an exercise in limitation and simplicity.  We want our music to sound like it was made by two people, not twelve.  Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

(Steve) Melody is divine.  Lyrics are human.  But they can’t really survive without the other.

Q: Where are you based?

Music City, U.S.A.  (a.k.a. Nashville, Tennessee)

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Like being a filmmaker living in Hollywood.  Nobody cares that you make music because all they can do is judge you against their music and/or their band/project.  Not necessarily a bad thing.  It makes you fight for your very own very existence and justification.

Ugly Kids Club

Levi's

Buy: Levi’s

Q: What are you currently working on?

We are currently writing for our first full-length record that will be recorded this summer.  We will also be making a film to coincide with the record.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

We’re so young; it’s hard to say. We had a great show last night.  Drake and his band were band was there, so that’s pretty cool.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in the next 12 months?

We would like to have our first record/ film released.  Also, we would like to be playing and touring much more than we currently are.

Q: What do you do to relax?

We are caffeine and nicotine addicted insomniacs.  There is no time for relaxing.  Life is too short.  And we have so many more songs to write.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I, Steve, am going to Italy next month.   I anticipate that will be my favorite holiday thus far.  I hope we have the opportunity to play in Europe soon.  Then that will be my/our favorite holiday.

I, Aliegh, would love to go to either Prague, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland or Japan. Mainly for the history and pure beauty but definitely Japan because… well who the hell doesn’t?

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

(Steve) This is the best time in history to be a creative person.  You don’t have to wait on ANYBODY to justify, confirm, or distribute your art.  If you feel so inclined, create.  You can distribute your art/music yourself, and the world is at your reach.  All you have to be is great.  Outstanding.   What we need is more amazing, remarkable, great art.  If you are average, or simply another version of something we already have, you are not being true to yourself and you need to go build your courage and come back as an original.  Or let others take the reigns.  That said, we are in the beginning stages of an art renaissance that is about connection as much as revolution.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

Steve is a Grammy nominated producer and songwriter and he also is vegetarian who has dreams about flying to different planets.

Aliegh kills dinner, eats it raw, and is not Grammy nominated.

Editor’s Note: Ugly Kids Club draw on an eclectic range of artistic influences to create something memorable, technically astute and with a catchy commercial edge.
