Hollie LA is an upcoming pop-soul vocalist from LA. Despite her incredibly busy schedule since creating her own record label, promoting her single and working on her new album she kindly agreed to complete a very detailed, intriguing and interesting interview for Essential Pop. Read on to discover what it’s like to live in the City of Angels, where you might have heard Hollie LA’s music on television and what we can expect from Hollie LA in the future.
Q: If you could classify your music in a genre or number of genres what would it be?
My music is classified as POP. My lyrics and melodies for my up-tempo songs are saucy -very tongue and cheek and on the flip side, my ballads expose a more serious and vulnerable side.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
The music I create is powerful yet sensual. I am a blue-eyed soul vocalist with a Pop twist! =)
Q: What is your musical background?
Since I was a little girl, music has been my passion and the only career that I wanted to pursue. The second I heard the beat and mad vocal melodies of Michael Jackson, Teena Marie, and Madonna; I knew music was my destiny – I was officially hooked. During my teenage years, songwriting came into play; lyrics and melodies seemed to effortlessly pour out of me which was an amazing way to express myself.
Q: How was 2010 for you?
2010 was a very blessed year for me- I launched my first music video that I wrote and produced called “POISON” & had some amazing song placements! “Domesticate It” was placed on NBC’s hit show, “The Office.” Additionally, my entire EP “Unlocked” was featured on the following shows/networks: VH1, Open House LA, 1st Look, Daily 10, Jersey Couture, Making Over America, and the video game -Our World.
Q: Who inspires you musically?
These combined factors inspire my music: the Past (Etta James & Ella Fitzgerald) when the craft of songwriting and passionate singing was a breath taking art, the Present (Madonna & Teena Marie) creating style/flavor and pushing the limits/boundaries through music to open/free our mind, and the Future – a clear path to innovate the unknown.
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
I admire the queen of pop -Madonna. Madonna has reinvented herself & her music time and again. No matter what, she has never given up and has stayed strong throughout all the ups and downs of her career.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
I would love to collaborate with the beautiful and talented Madonna! I respect that she is a leader in the music industry, not a follower!
Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?
Some of my favorite songs on my ipod are Michael Jackson (Billie Jean), Etta James (At Last), Usher (More), Madonna (Revolver), and Duke Ellington (In a Sentimental Mood).
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
When I hear an instrumental track, it can quickly inspire me to write lyrics and melodies right on the spot. Also, I can hear a melody in my head which usually turns into a hook, and then the lyrics follow. I also keep a journal that I write in everyday.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
BOTH melody and lyrics go hand and hand. Without the catchy melody, would the listener want to just read the lyrics? Lyrics give the song meaning, while the melody keeps the listener interested in what it is you have to say!
Q: Where are you based?
I am based in Los Angeles, CA.
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
I absolutely love LA and can’t imagine living anywhere else; I guess you probably can tell from my stage name. =)
Q: What are you currently working on?
For 2011, I am writing and recording new singles for my first full-length album! Also, I will be performing around the Los Angeles area testing my new singles with my most important listeners!
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
The highlight of my career to date would be starting my own indie label, Unlocked Records with my music producer/partner, Kosta Lois. The freedom to write and create with no limits or boundaries has given me the opportunity to hone my artistry.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?
I hope to achieve a completed full-length album for starters! I would love to place one of my songs in a feature film! Lastly, I’d like to book a national tour to meet more of my fans!
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
In the studio writing and recording, so I have no gigs to report at the moment.
Q: What do you do to relax?
Relax??? What the hell is that? Just joking! Visiting with family and friends helps me relax. I also love going on walks, it helps me unwind after a long day.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
Please add me as a friend on facebook and I will send you a free mp3 of my latest single!
Editor’s Note: Her diverse musical background, sensual vibe and artistic inspirations give her both a unique, alluring and commercial sound. We hope to hear more of Hollie LA in the future when she’s completing her album.
