Maveriq is a soul / R&B singer from London. 2011 is getting pretty hectic for Maveriq with an array of upcoming gigs, a song video to shoot, continuing promotion as well as putting the finishing touches to his latest EP. Despite all this, he kindly agreed to complete a feature artist interview for everyone and us here at Essential Pop. Below is the full interview where he discusses the songwriting greats whom give him inspiration for his soulful, smooth as silk sound, what he does to relax and where you can see him perform live over the next couple of months.
Q: If you could classify your music in a genre or a number of genres what would it be?
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
Ummm, I’d say “The Music Lover who loves to make music about making love!”
Q: What is your musical background?
Mine goes back to 1991 when I began singing in my mothers choir at church, thats where all the greats started… I worked my way up from being one of the back singers to the lead soloist; Mum always said I was an exhibitionist and a bit of a show off!
Q: How was 2010 for you?
You know what, 2010 was surprsingly good for me, I was beginning to find my feet as an artist and I had PA’s coming out of nowhere, I met alot of interesting people and I got to perform at a lot of great places.
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Two people: Stevie Wonder is my all time idol, I absolutely love his music, and its so rare for an artist to come out and say that, but for me Stevie is and always be one of the greatest songwriters of this century and the mere fact that he plays piano professionally and is blind is nothing short of amazing! And the other is my Uncle, Nathan Prime (you can find him on YouTube) I’ve pretty much lived on this guys music all my life as he is also a singer, and he truly makes me believe that I can take over the world if I just don’t stop.
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Definitely Usher…. I saw him in concert recently and the guy is an amazing entertainer, and because we’re in the same field, I could easily learn a few tips and tricks from him
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
Stevie Wonder (obviously) and from the UK, i’m a fan of Baby Blue…she’s moving on up right now and I think we’d make amazing music together!
Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?
A lot of different things, my collection is varied but right now I’m rinsing Musiq Soulchild and Joe!
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
I think back on my life experiences, I’d say over the past 24 years, I’ve had more bad experiences than good ones, so I dig deep down and find something inside me to put on paper.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
Depends on the instrumental really, but for me, its always been lyrics… I’ve always been one to really “go for the throat” when it comes to penning something down, I like to be able to tell a story in a song.
Q: Where are you based?
South West London
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
Its ok, I mean, I live on a quiet main road, nothing really goes on where I live, its pretty dry!
Q: What are you currently working on?
My 2nd EP which is yet to be titled, and two videos which are being storyboarded as we speak…..really exciting times!
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
Two things: When I was 16 I was chosen to perform for the Queens Golden Jubilee celebrations with my group back in school, that meant a lot to us cos we did numerous television appearances and radio interviews, and the 2nd was last week when I released my very first body of work, my EP entitled “Room 1402″ it was a Valentines Day special and within the first 3 days i hit over 1000 downloads….That was possibly one of the happiest days of my life!
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?
If I keep going the rate I am going, maybe I’ll rack up some high profile collabs and eventually get snapped up by a major label!
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
Yes, I have a show next week Monday the 28th at Distiller Bar in Farringdon, I’m headlining the set with my crew “BreddWinnaz” its going to be an AMAZING showcase, and also I have a PA on the 6th March at Spotlight Showcase in Shoreditch
Q: What do you do to relax?
I sit and read…nothing relaxes me more than stimulating the old brain!
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
Yes, I’ll be shooting my debut video for “Dirty Little Secret” off my EP Room 1402 on the 12th of March, 2011 and I’m looking for a leading lady, if you think thats you….get at me!!
Many thanks for Simply Elite for assisting with this interview.
