Artist Interview – SpaceWitchPop

SpaceWitchPop is an electro-pop-dance artist currently plying her trade in Helsinki, Finland. She kindly agreed to complete an interview with us, share some of her amazingly artistic photos and listen to her latest tracks. Read on to what music she listens to when relaxing, her musical inspirations and her thoughts about alien life!

Q: If you could classify your music in a genre or a number of genres what would it be?

hmmmm… This is a question that i’ve always struggled with! Before i used to list a number of genres, like electro-pop-dance etc.. all combined somehow, but im always trying to come up with something new in my music, so there is always some genres left out of that list. So now when asked, i just simply say “SpaceWitchPop” ;)

Q: What is your musical background?

-ACTUALLY! This is funny, but i started singing in a church choir! its funny because im not a religious person at all, i just somehow ended up in a church choir. Afterall i stil think it is a good thing, because i learned much being in it. After that i sang in a band (MDC) for about 5 years and then started doing music on my own, discovered fruity loops and SpaceWitchPop was born =)

Q: How was 2010 for you?

It had its ups and downs :D mostly i enjoyed it, did a lot of fun things, did music, met new people, made new friends, planned my future things and partyed my ass off ;D

Q: Who inspires you musically?

oh my god what a question! I think Army Of Lovers is one of the biggest inspirations to me and to my music, in every way. Then there are some singers that i absolutely adore, like Kate Bush, Michael Jackson, Nina Hagen, Gwen Stefani.. Who inspire me to always try to be better, and to beat myself =)

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I mostly just listen to music thats made before 2000 and some random house music, so this is hard one for me :D I love Christina Aguileras voice and how she can use it, so i look up to her in that way. She is truly amazing. Otherwise some “modernday artists” that i listen to are M.I.A, Scissor Sisters, Crystal Castles, Martin Landsky, Gorillaz…the list just goes on and on.. :)

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

EVERYONE! Actually i cant think of a person who i wouldnt do a gig or collaborate with. i think it is so fun and exciting to mix different type of performers together, and not just have a concert but to have a spectacular show! Thats why i always ask different type of performes to join me in my shows, to make it more fun and to make it my own. In my next show im having cool UV painted hoolah hoopers doing some awesome shit! :D

Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?

I DON’T HAVE AN I POD! im still stuck with a mp3 player, but its full off deep house, bimbo jungle house and space pop

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I actually have to wait for a good time until my musically creative side wakes up, sometimes it takes days sometimes weeks, but when its “awaken” i just simply go to my computer and start doing my songs. It feels like im in somesort of a trance, and when i wake up from it my song is ready. Then i just load it up to my 8-track and come up with the singing lines and lyrics =) In some cases i also see a dream and in it i hear my next song, wake up and make it happen :)

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

-MELODY!!! Absolutely, to me the lyrics don’t really matter at all, if the song is fabulous then i can close my ears from the lyrics :D What comes to my own music, i always try to make complete fictional lyrics, but of course sometimes there is some personal stuff accidently involved x)

Q: Where are you based?

At this moment im based in planet earth, but i long back to my home planet, can’t wait to get back there <3

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It is fabulous!

Q: What are you currently working on?

Currently im just trying to get my computer working again! Without it its quite hard to make stuff happen, but now that i cant make new songs for a while, i’m concentrating on my promotional side, and on my shows of course.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

As SpaceWitchPop, i havent really had any specific moments, but it is always a highlight of my day to have positive comments from fans and i feel like every show that i do is a highlight of my life, always :D But still waiting for the ultimate highlight ;)

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?

A lot ;)

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

At this moment i only have gigs coming up in Helsinki,Finland. and you can always check them up in or in my facebook page =)

Q: What do you do to relax?

It depends ;) sleep, eat, drink, listen to music, do music, have sex, chill with friends, read a book and parrrrtyyyyyyy =)
