Artist Interview – tenBennys

tenBenny’s is a talented up and coming rapper and producer living between the musical hubs of LA and London. Here’s an interview that he kindly gave to Essential Pop where he shares his interests in music, what life’s been like for him in 2010 and what we can all look forward to in 2011.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

I am an artist first and foremost. I use rap and melodic music to portray my story and experiences.

Q: What is your musical background?
My musical backgrounds are pretty diverse ranging from classical piano all the way to hip hop and rap. I’ve always had a musical mind where ever I can and have been able to tap to make a beat I have done. Piano was the first love which enabled me to write melodies and songs. I would say that got my musical career off the ground. Then when I started to rap seriously that just kept propelling me. There’s something about writing that I just enjoy and can never stop doing. Especially as you go through life with different experiences and being in different places I personally just tend to tell my story even deeper to the listeners and I think that shows through my music.

Q: How was 2010 for you?

2010 was a great year for me. It gave me the chance to reflect and take my music in a new direction. I released two mixtapes numerous music video and other projects and my first ever official single and video through a major distribution company being Interscope Digital Distribution. So that was a huge accomplishment for me. It was different from being signed to a label to then being the boss of your own independent operation I learnt a lot over the last year and created a lot of art I intend to showcase to the world this year and in the future.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Musically I have many influences. If I were to specify it I would say artists like Pharrell, Dr Dre, Kanye West, 50 Cent, these are all people who have influenced me and my music in some way or another. In terms of true inspiration artists like the late Michael Jackson are just one of a kind. In all aspects of his music he inspires me, I look up to him a lot as do most.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I look up to modern day artists like Kanye 50 Cent Lil Wayne and Pharrell I love the way they influence hip hop culture and grab it by the  neck. People pay attention when they speak I want to have similar influence with my music and raps.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I would love to collab with 50 Cent, Soulja Boy and Kanye West. Also to do shows with 50 Cent and G-Unit I think the energy they bring to their shows is intense.

Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?

Songs on my ipod…erm….Rick Ross new mixtape, tenBennys lol some sukh knight, bit of fif, some kanye some brazilian music some spanish music lol classical really a bit of everything I’d say I have an eclectic taste :)

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

My creative process is secret lol. Im just playing its really touch the keys and think music. Or sometimes I get a melody in my head and go put it down. Or I could think of lyrics first then build the song around that. There’s many different ways really, no limitations is the most important thing to creating for me.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Melody or lyrics ? I would say they are equally as important but if  I really had to say for me  melodies.

Q: Where are you based?

I am based between the UK and Los Angeles California United States.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Where Im from its weird haha I feel like I’m one of few true artists but the ones I do come or have come across I have got on a particular wave length thats been pretty dope. Shout out to Dwayne Anderson ;)

Q: What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on promoting my single All Eyes On Me and my ep Built For This. I have also begun work on my third mixtape “Berserko” and my album which I am yet to give the title away.

tenBennys new EP - Built For This

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

The highlight of my career was being signed to a US record label and living and doing music in Hollywood Los Angeles the best and only place to be an artist.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?

I am hoping to achieve national success in the UK this year and spread the tenBennys name also to obtain another recording contract with a major label back in the states as most of my contacts are there.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I am still awaiting confirmation for my upcoming feb gigs but you can find out through my twitter page I always broadcast on there or my websites and

Q: What do you do to relax?

To relax I like to go restaurants eat nice food and maybe watch some movies and kick back with some skittles.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I’d like to let the readers know tenBennys is the name tenMillions the dream “I See Everything” track 5 on my EP ;) Let the artists be known…
