Recently David Jarvis agreed to have an interview with us at Essential Pop. David is an extremely talented musician with 30 years of experience in the music industry. Read below for what he said about his life in music, his influences and what he enjoys doing outside of his busy schedule and his future move back to the USA.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
New ,fresh and inventive. Reminiscent of the psychedelic pop of the late seventies and early eighties.
Q: What is your musical background?
Over 30 years experience both live and in the studio. Began playing guitar at the age of 12 and moved on to bass, drums and then keyboard. Attended The Music Business Institute(Art Institute) in Atlanta to learn all aspects of the music industry. Main focus was on Recording/engineering and producing. I have recorded and toured for many Northeastern US indie labels such as “Cargo Records”, Alternative Tentacles”, “Big Heavy World” and “Good Citizen records”. In 2000 I secured drive time airplay in the Vermont, New York and New Hampshire with my song “Sunflower Street”
Also in 2000 my song “Papertrain” was used in the soundtrack of the hit MTV program “Road Rules” prompting the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to invite to to join as a voting member. As a result I am a voting member of the GRAMMY awards and an active member in the Academy.
Q: How was 2010 for you?
Very good productively. I built a new Studio and I am working on several new projects. I am also opening my new indie label “Zen Baby” and I will be signing several fresh, inventive artists in the next year.
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Anyone with an innovative approach to songwriting and producing. Some of my all time faves are Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello and David Bowie.
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Jason Mraz, Elvis Costello, Marshall Crenshaw.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
Elvis Costello, Marshall Crenshaw, Ringo Starr, Ray Manzarek.
Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?
I don’t own an ipod. I have a lot of music on my computer however. I have some of everything. I am a huge Frank Zappa fan and I have a lot of Frank on my computer.
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
Usually I start with a guitar and some lyrical ideas. Then I will build the other parts of the song ie Bass, drums orchestration, around that as I go. I am never afraid to scratch an idea that isn’t going like I want and start over. I believe time and hard work is the best way to achieve perfection(or as close to it as I can come).
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
To me, both are important, along with arrangement. A song is like a painting or cooking a great meal. Everything has to melt together well so the work as a whole is tasty.
Q: Where are you based?
Internationally. My home is in New York but I have been living in Germany for the past three years. I am about to re-locate to El Paso Texas this May 2011.
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
I am very proud of my little home town in Upstate New York. It’s great to be where I’m from. Great people. Great town.
Q: What are you currently working on?
Two new albums, you’ll have to wait and hear!
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
The whole experience I think. I have had a very interesting life so far. I try to enjoy and make the most of every day, every experience.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?
International and worldwide fame, and more work of course!
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
Not at the moment. I am concentrating on the moving process.
Q: What do you do to relax?
Play guitar. Drink beer, cook, write.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
Please listen to, and enjoy my music. Thanks for being a friend and a fan.
